You do not have to unscrew them to set the time; you simply pull them out and push them back in.<\/p>\n<h3>2. What kind of tube does the case need?<\/h3>\n<p>The watch case must have a very simple <strong>smooth metal tube<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>No thread:<\/strong> There must be no thread on the outside or inside of the tube.<\/li>\n<li>It is basically just a smooth cylinder that sits firmly in the case.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whether this tube protrudes slightly from the case or sits flush in a recess (countersink) of the case depends on the design of the watch \u2013 the principle remains the same.<\/p>\n<h3>3. How does it all work? (Fitting the parts together)<\/h3>\n<p>The crown is built like a bell: it has an outer, hollow cap and a solid metal pin in the center. The small black rubber rings (O-rings) sit on this pin.<\/p>\n<p>When the crown is mounted on the watch, two things happen at the same time:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The pin goes in:<\/strong> The solid inner pin with the rubber rings slides <em>into the inside<\/em> of the smooth case tube. The rubber rings are pressed firmly against the inner wall of the tube and seal the watch against water and dust (like a cork in a wine bottle).<\/li>\n<li><strong>The cap goes over it:<\/strong> The outer shell of the crown slips <em>over<\/em> the case tube (or sinks into the case recess).
